I had planned to do this thread earlier in the week but, as some of you may know, the British Orthodox website was a victim of a hacking incident by an Algerian Islamist group. Little did they know that I was using an article there for a thread which would paint their ancestors who invaded North Africa in a reasonably positive light.
This point in history jumps to 190 years after Chalcedon (640), by this time the Persians were playing wargames with Rome with border provences such as Armenian, Syria, Palestine and Egypt constantly being conquered and reconquered by one of these empires. It was in this context that the Islamic Umma emerged and within 8 years of the death of Muhammad were at the Sinai. in 640 Caliph Umar invaded the Province of Egypt with a force of only 4000 men against Cyrus' Roman forces.
The main issue I want to discuss in thie thread was the reaction of the Oriental community to this event since at the time they were under great persecution by the Byzantines for their Miaphysite Christology. There had been attempts of reconciliation such as the creation of the Monothelite Heresy but most of these had been simply labelled as insulting to both parties.
I am hoping Suryoyo will help me out with the Syrian side as I only have little information there, also anyone more verses in the subtleties of Coptic History is more than welcome to picth in, as there are vast gaps in my knowledge there also.
So. On the Syriac front, I found an interesting article by Mark Dickens of Cambridge University, who looked at the later perceptions of Medieval Syriac historians on the Turks. The whole dissertation is long but it has some interesting sections on the Chronicles of Michael and John of Ephesus.

For the Coptic side, there is Metropolitan Seraphim's "The Coptic Church under Islam"

I will post later in the week with my views, others please feel free to do so beforehand or add any info or sources you come across.
