The issue of iconography has been a heated topic of debate in the Church in the past. In fact, as early as the 3d century we see debates concerning iconography in the Church. However, we understand that icons are an integral part of the Christian life, though others may disagree with us. With that being said, this is a board for posting certain arguments in support of iconography, church father quotes, Bible verses, and any resources we can offer each other on the matter

Defense of icons depends who it is I guess. If they are heterodox but come from a group which at least recognises the authority of Councils then point them to the seventh Ecumenical Council and the anathemas. Otherwise we can point them to the Old Testament where God commands them to put images of Cherubs in the Temple etc. (especially for groups who do not recognise the majority of Church history).

Here is a piece I wrote on the defence of Icons last year: orthodoxbrit.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/icons-depicting-visible.htmlThe key I find is that when people call it Idolatry, we need to remember 2 things. 1) Moses was told to build Golden images of Angels on the Ark after the Commandment was given, so that nullifies any Absolutism claimed there. 2) With the incarnation, God appeared to us so that we could see him, thus why we only depict the Dove for the Spirit and Christ, or when we decpict the trinity it is as the Hospitality of Abraham. We are not depicting heavenly things we cannot see (Apart from at the Cathedral in Moscow which has the Father Icon) and thus not going against any commandment in Iconography.
