Hi everyone.
I read the article on Putin giving the old Believer Patriarch an award today and noticed that I know very little about them apart from the mass burning for which they are most known.
So... can someone enlighten us all, who are the Old Believers?

The Wikipedia article says it all. They rejected the reforms by Patriarch Nikon (which, oddly enough, were more Orthodox anyway) and generally live in seclusion. Some believe that crossing yourself with three fingers is anti-Christlike. Some just don't like the reforms.

The reforms seemed interesting, as they were (as the article seemed to point out) more in line with the rest of the Orthodox world.
Were the Metropolitanate/Patriarchate of Moscow always practicing the obscured versions before these then?

There are Old Believers (Palaioimerologites) in Greece as well. They broke communion with the Church of Greece and now they call themselves the "Genuine Orthodox Church". They have other bishops than the Church of Greece.

Are they the community that broke communion over the calendar change?

According to their name, Palaioimerologites, they seem to be... Palaio = old, imerologio = calendar...

I thought the old believers were in schism as well. They have some groups here and some refer to themselves "synods in resistance", mainly over the calendar issue.

I suppose that the old believer's schism was so long ago that they are practically a completely different form of Orthodox Christianity now as opposed to just a separatist sect.
If they have a Separate Patriarch now it is highly unlikely they could be brought into the Church Easily, as opposed to the Traditionalist groups who are simply under metropolitans like ROCOR and so could easily be brought back without the issue of multiple Patriarchs.
