Obviously we need a thread like this Personally, right now, I want a book with the Apostolic Fathers but I'm not sure which version to buy. There's "The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations (3rd edition)" by Michael W. Holmes and "The Apostolic Fathers" by the late Jack N. Sparks Both have positive reviews but the first one is more recent and contains the latest research on the Apostolic Fathers but the commentary might be a bit protestant while the second one is older but was written by an Orthodox Christian. What do you think? Anyone read either of them? I also recently bought "Ethiopian Servant of Christ" and "Stories from the Egyptian Desert" by Bishop Macarius and "The Crucified Jesus" by Father Manasseh Youhanna. I'll probably "review" them after I've read them.

Yep, that looks similar. Unless elionberger thinks that thread is for something more specific than this then you can close this one and I'll move my question over to that one instead.

I started that thread with the purpose of it becoming a book study group for catechumens and those interested in becoming Orthodox.
I would like everybody to vote on one particular book and then we can all read it together, posting thoughts and questions as we move through the reading.
You may want to keep this thread as strictly a spot to post recommendations, reviews, and the like . . .

Those Bible commentaries by Father Malaty you were talking about on the other thread are the ones that can be found for free online right?
I'm looking for some Bible commentaries actually.
I've read some mixed stuff about "Ancient Christian commentary on Scriptures".
Any good, modern translation of S:t John Chrysostom's ones?
I see Blessed Theophylact's commentary recommended on several places (haven't come across anything bad about it yet actually).

I've just read “Orthodoxy for the Non-Orthodox: A Brief Introduction to Orthodox Christianity" by John Garvey and I'm hoping to start "Introducing the Orthodox Church: Its Faith and Life" by A.M. Coniaris.
