I recently replied to a question about if the Eastern Orthodox Church recognises Roman Catholic Marian Apparitions. I answered by posting this great article, that gives a nice answer about this issue: orthodoxinfo.com/inquirers/marian_apparitions.aspx So what is your opinion? Do you believe them or not? Update: I had no idea tha the Apparition of Cairo was not Roman Catholic but Coptic. Though Eastern Orthodoxy has not an official stance on this apparition, since EO and OO are still in schism, I could say that I could believe this apparition.

I find it interesting that Orthodoxinfo almost accepts the Zeitun apparitions, especially due to their usually hostile view to anything coptic.
The point they made was very interesting. I especially found their mention ofhow they in the case of Zeitun, unlike Latin apparitions, Mary did not make demands of "convert" to those of other faiths. Mary appears before Coptic churches a lot, especially after Martyrdoms such as Warraq in 2009. It seems she simply appears to remind them that she still is there.
For me, the numbers and pure diversity of the witnesses makes it undeniable. She appeared to Copts, Greeks, Latins, Protestants, Muslims and Jews. Even the Muslim president of Egypt witnessed this and made if officially accepted by the Government. Jews even witnessed this and they deny all things of Christ, yet accepted that an unknown phenomenon occurred. So, for all 3 abrahamic faiths represented in Egypt it was accepted.
In the case of Roman apparitions, I find any appearance which makes demands or threats, or appears only to promote support of controversial Roman Doctrine (immaculate conception always being mentioned after Rome made it official doctrine) to be suspicious, especially when it is to other Christians.

Yes Daniel, I agree with you. About the Zeitun Apparitions, the key difference that may prove that they are true is what you said, that Virgin Mary didn't demand convertions. But I am not sure if the Catholic apparitions are real (in some cases they may be) or disillusions.

I feel like some apparitions could be the real deal, but a lot are hoaxes. People do anything for attention, you know? But there could be truth behind some of them. I agree with what OrthodoxBrit said about making demands or threats. I feel like Virgin Mary would be more kind and loving than that.

I treat all with scepticism... especially the RC ones.

As with any apparition I think its best to stay on the err of caution and treat such things with scepticism unless its been shown to be genuine. The Marian apparitions, for example, seem legitimate but as for the RC ones, I'm not so sure. As has been already stated, they seem to only push RC doctrine and issue threats of hell fire saying things like "God is angry, but..."

This reminds me a lot of what we were discussing on the Christ Apparitions forum. Does anyone know of any Roman examples where Mary simply appeared without speech? That always seems to be the case in orthodox ones, at least modern apparitions such as the recent Egyptian appearances.

I have yet to come across any; as far as I know whenever the Franks say that there has been a Marian apparition they say she has always spoken to them and in those words only ever affirm their dogma. I know the Blessed Ever Virgin has appeared to St. Seraphim of Sarov with other Saints and said to St. John the Theologian "He is of our lineage" but it wasn't to affirm any dogma.
